UnitedHealth Division Faces Litigation from Nebraska Following $100 Million Patient Data Breach

January 2025

The state of Nebraska has taken legal action against a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, Optum360, due to a massive patient data breach valued at around $100 million. This lawsuit follows the breach incident where attackers were able to retrieve and potentially expose the personal data of more than 500,000 Nebraska residents. The compromised information included Social Security numbers, birth dates, and some medical information. The Nebraska Attorney General's office stated that Optum360 was negligent in their duty to protect patient data and didn’t provide adequate security measures. Additionally, the company allegedly failed to promptly notify the affected patients about the breach. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the breach's potential harm to the impacted residents. It also seeks a court order to ensure that Optum360 takes comprehensive steps to enhance its data security measures and prevent any further data breaches.
